The invention of cement revolutionized construction and civil engineering. It is not - as one might think - from the brain of a diploma engineer, but the experience of a gardener. As it was the fashion, there was rock throwing of cement on a fence. He observed that this material was both waterproof and rot proof and used it in place of wooden flower boxes. Noticing that this material had a high resistance, it was used for bins, first small then large, then tanks, soon beams, bridges ... The book traces the history of this slow development which was carried out over a dozen years, as well as trial and error and achievements of other researchers, in France, the United States, Great Britain and Germany.

Until now, the few existing systematic texts on construction materials have primarily been directed at building engineers. An overview for architects, which also considers the importance of construction materials in the sensory perception of architecture-including tactile qualities, smell, color, and surface structure-has not been available. With the publication of the Construction Materials Manual, all that has changed. As a basic work aimed equally at the questions and perspectives of architects and building engineers, it will bring together all of the above-mentioned viewpoints. It addresses fundamental questions of sustainability, including life-span, environmental impact, and material cycles, while also presenting material innovations. All of the principal conventional and innovative construction materials are comprehensively documented, with attention to their production, manufacture, fabrication, treatment, surfaces, connections, and characteristics. International examples help to illustrate their use in architecture, where a building's appearance is often defined by a single material. Thus, the Construction Materials Manual will support the daily work of architects and engineers in the choice of construction materials in a comprehensive and at the same time vivid and stimulating manner.

This book deals with technical textiles in three sections: in the first chapter, the material is introduced together with its specific properties; the second chapter deals with its uses in the areas of architecture, textile facades, solar protection and interior design, with special attention to detailing techniques and construction principes. The third chapter illustrates the various fields of application with a selection of some twenty-four international built projects

Roger Silverstone's book places the global media at the heart of the moral future of civilisation. It argues that the media (the press, broadcasting, the Internet and increasingly peer-to-peer technologies and networks) have a profound significance for the way in which the world is understood by its citizens. It also argues that without a clear understanding of that significance, and without a critique of the way in which the media go about their daily business, we are likely to see an erosion in the capacity of human beings to understand and respect each other, especially those whom they see and hear only in their mediation. In a world of increasing polarisation and demonisation, the media have a powerful role to play. They can reinforce or they can challenge that polarisation. The book proposes that we should think of the global media as a mediapolis, a single space of political and social communication, in which the basis for the relationships between neighbours and strangers can be either constructed or destroyed. The mediapolis is a moral space, a space of hospitality, responsibility, obligation and judgement. And questioning its present and future requires attention to issues of media justice, media literacy and media regulation.

Wonder Wood presents this timeless material as it is being used today and how it can be used in the future. It also documents a selection of current international projects and processes, making-ofs, and experiments by 120 internationally renowned designers, architects, and artists, whose creative and innovative approach to the material makes their work compelling. For selected projects, interviews with the designers provide an in-depth look at the creative process and its results. A second section, dedicated to materials and technologies examines innovative developments as well as wood, wood-based materials, finishing technologies, and wooden structure principles.
